The term Jack-O-Lantern was originally used to describe the unusual phenomenon ignis fatuus or "foolish fire" known as a will-o'-the-wisp in English folklore. Well, not intensely but the jack o'lantern does have a bioluminescent enzyme which causes the gills to glow a faint blue-green color in the dark. They look like chantrells and are worth knowing for those who collect edibles.

People have been making jack-o'-lanterns at Halloween for centuries. It is a large orange mushroom that is often found in clumps on decaying stumps, buried roots or at the base of hardwood trees in eastern North. I sat in the dark with this for a couple minutes and I could see parts of it glowing; I tried to get a picture of it glowing in the dark at a super long exposure but it didn't work, the gills are nonetheless a beautiful varying shade…yellow and orange but somehow also green tinted.
